What is constipation?

How to get rid of constipation: Constipation means difficulty for a person to empty his/her large bowel or passage of hard stool or it is very difficult to pass stool properly.

It is a lifestyle disease and with the help of some home remedies with lifestyle changes, you can get rid of constipation.

There are many reasons behind it like the passage of stool very slowly in the intestine and because of slow movement more water is absorbed by the large intestine and the stool becomes harder.

Causes of constipation

Lack of dietary fiber…

Dietary fiber along with hydration is very necessary to regulate bowel movements and people who consume a good amount of dietary fiber experience fewer chances of constipation.

Some food sources like fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, chickpeas, lentils and other legumes contain a good amount of dietary fibre.

Some foods like eggs, meat cheese and highly processed foods like white bread, fast foods, and chips contain very less amount of fiber which aggravates the problem of constipation.


Lack of physical activity…

Lack of physical activity also leads to constipation. A study conducted in 2013 supports this fact.

It is found that the people who spend many weeks or days sitting in a chair or in a bed may have experienced a higher risk of constipation than those people who do more physical activity every day.

  • Opioid pain relievers- Codeine, Oxycodone, Hydromorphone

  • Aluminium-containing antacids- Amphojel, Basaljel
  • Calcium containing antacids- Tums
  • Calcium channel blockers- Diltiazem, Nifedipine

Some diuretics- Furosemide, Hydrochlorothiazides


Ageing…

Chances of the problem of constipation increase while ageing.

The proper cause is still unknown but it is thought that while ageing the movements of the intestine become slower and other medical conditions with a lack of dietary fiber aggravate this problem.

Irritable bowel syndrome, a functional psychogenic intestinal difficulty also aggravates the problem of constipation.

  • Lubricating agents- for smooth movement of stool in the intestine like Fleet, a mineral oil.
  • Fiber containing supplements- also called bulk-forming laxatives like FiberCon.

  • Osmotic agents- which hydrate the stool in the intestine and ease its movement.

If the problem of constipation is not cured by all these measures then your doctor may need to remove the impacted stool manually or surgically.

Your doctor may need to do a further investigation like a CT scan,  MRI scan or X-ray to rule out the exact cause of constipation like any obstruction in the gut.

Fiber Intake must be increased…

You should eat 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily in the form of vegetables, fresh fruits and fortified cereals.
